Go look in your closet. Look around at all the clothes and options you have. Do you actually wear all of this? Think about it. What do you wear on a consistent basis? Do you find yourself gravitating toward a certain look? Maybe skinny jeans and a sweater, a biker short set, or a sundress?
Many of us tend to have staple pieces or looks that we love and know work for us. As a result, we end up buying and wearing this look over and over but with slight variations. For example, one look I know I tend to stick to, when I am working out, is leggings and a crop top. I have dozens of different styles, colors, and variations of this exact look. Is there a look that you tend to stick to?
Many women (and men) get frustrated with finding clothes that fit. The problem is fashion designers and manufacturers create clothes based on the “average body type” but what is the average body type? We come in many different shapes and sizes so clothes made for the “average body type” end up not fitting the majority of us properly. As a result, it is easy to get discouraged when trying new looks. So many of us tend to stick with brands and styles we know will work for us.
Finding a look you love and that you know works for your body type is great, however, this can easily eventually lead to a style rut. Mixing it up and trying new things will keep your wardrobe fresh.
As a tall curvy woman, I’ve definitely experienced the struggle to find clothes that fit, they are often too short, too small in the hips, or huge in the waist. Because of this frustration, I have fallen victim to a style rut in the past. So I decided to get a second opinion and see if a stylist could give me ideas and looks I have not thought of. I reached out and collaborated with Totally Becky, (@beckybelo) a stylist, and blogger, to see what she would put me in and get a fresh new take on my wardrobe.
Becky and I decided to have her style me in three looks: a business professional look, a fitness look, and a going-out look. Check out my experience working with Becky and the three looks below.
Look 1: Boss Babe aka Business Professional
TOP: Crinkled Button Up Shirt PANTS: Crinkled Suit Pants PURSE: Nylon Baguette Bag EARRINGS: Kate Spade Mini Faux Sud Pearl Earrings HEELS: Clear Cake Stand Sling Back Point Toe Court Shoe
I’m going to be honest, at first, I was a little hesitant about working with a stylist virtually. In the past, when I’ve thought of working with a stylist, I always pictured being in person and the process being like What Not To Wear on TLC lol.
However, right away Becky’s knowledge and professionalism soon calmed my initial concerns. My initial concern with working virtually ended up actually being one of my favorite parts of working with Becky. Because everything was done remotely, it was very quick and easy. The whole process was done over Zoom, Google Docs, and email. The longest part of the whole collab was just waiting on the clothes to arrive.
The experience started off with a Zoom call, where Becky asked me questions about my style. What I love, what I am looking for, and what my absolute no goes are. Then within a few days, Becky sent me a Google Doc with multiple options for each look, that she felt would look good on me and were on-trend. I chose my favorite of each look.
The variety of looks Becky provided me, made me feel like I was apart of the process. It felt more like a collaboration than just a one-sided selection of a stylist putting me in clothes they like. It was a combination of Becky’s knowledge and expertise of fashion, trends, and fit and my style.
Look 2: Fitness
LEGGINGS: Montana Olive Green Polka Dot Print High-Impact Leggings BRA TOP: Montana Olive Green Polka Dot Print High-Impact Sports Bra SHIRT: Look At Me Now White Dolman Sleeve Crop Top SNEAKERS: Adidas Originals NMD_R1 Sneaker
One of my favorite things about working with Becky was that I discovered new brands and looks that I normally wouldn’t have tried. Some of the looks, she chose I would have just walked right past in the store. I would have assumed they wouldn’t have looked good on me or I would never picture myself in them but they ended up looking great!
As I mentioned earlier, many people tend to avoid trying new looks because of the frustration surrounding fit. But a stylist’s job is to know all different body types and what looks flattering on each. Working with a stylist takes the frustration out of finding clothes that fit.
Look 3: Going Out
DRESS: Cut Out Ribbed Dress HEELS: Nude Clear Heels Ankle Tie Sandal EARRINGS: Gold Medium Drop Hoop Earring
It’s easy to get in a fashion rut. Spice it up. Get a different perspective. Even if you consider yourself very stylish it helps to get another perspective and see what a stylist would style you in.
